Ḥilm: Forbearance Ḥilm names the steadiness that holds when someone pushes. Being contradicted stings, and the mouth wants to answer before the sting fades. Forbearance leaves a gap between the sting and the reply, so a person still feels the insult while the words that come out stay calm.

I guarantee a house in paradise for anyone who drops an argument even when he is right: being right is not the goal The Prophet promised this to people who are correct and still let the fight go. Arguments usually drag on because someone has already made his point and now wants it admitted out loud. Letting go at that moment costs something, and the one who does it keeps the person instead of the point.

Rifq: Gentleness Rifq is the softness in how someone handles people, and the Prophet said God gives for gentleness what he does not give for harshness. Gentleness comes easy with those who agree and hard with the stubborn or the rude. Rough handling makes a person defend himself, and a defended person hears nothing, while softness lowers the guard so the words land.

Naṣīḥa: Wanting the other person's good Naṣīḥa is the wish for someone's good sitting behind whatever you tell him. Al-Ghazali warned about teachers who want admiration, since their knowledge ends up serving their own standing. The same correct sentence lands as help or as a put-down, and the listener can always tell which one it is.

Ṣabr: Patience Ṣabr is staying with something hard without giving up or turning sour. Teaching wears people down, since the same question comes back and yesterday's answer has already been forgotten. Impatience leaks out as a sigh or a clipped reply, and patience keeps the door open long enough for slow understanding to arrive.

Live 2 Timothy 2:24 today

  1. When a reply lands that stings, let the sting pass before you type. Feel the whole thing, then send the calm version, not the first one.
  2. In the argument you are winning, stop. Say something like "you might be right about that" and let it go, even when you are not wrong. You keep the person instead of the point.
  3. When someone asks you the same question for the third time, answer it the way you did the first time, without the sigh. The sigh is the part they will remember.

In your last disagreement, did you want the other person to be better off, or just to admit you were right?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

When someone wrongs you, consider that they believed they were doing right. Teach them kindly if you can, and if you cannot, do not let anger take the place of the teaching.

Confucius · Analects

Asked about friendship, Confucius said to advise the other person honestly and guide them well, and when they will not hear it, to stop rather than bring disgrace on yourself. Correction has a limit set by care for the person.
