Ego v. Being

Those who oppose you are almost always at war within themselves first. The reactive, defended person is divided against their own being, ruled by a mind that mistakes its opinions for who they are. When you meet such a person with your own ego, you only feed the conflict.

Meekness is the absence of that reaction. To respond from stillness rather than wounded pride is to hold open a space in which another can awaken. You cannot argue someone into truth. But when you stay present instead of defensive, you stop reflecting their resistance back at them, and the change they could not be forced into becomes possible.

  1. Before replying to the message that stung you, write the hot answer somewhere else and delete it. Then send the sentence you would send if you were not defending anything.
  2. When someone at the dinner table says the thing that makes you bristle, ask a real question instead of countering. Their position is usually an argument they are having with themselves, and your calm keeps the room open.
  3. When a colleague goes at you in a meeting or on a group thread, drop your voice rather than raising it. Say what you see without the jab, and let the quiet do the work your sharpness would undo.

Who have I been arguing with, when what they needed was for me to stop pushing back?
