2 Timothy 4:5 Meaning But You Be Sober in All Things

But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

What does 2 Timothy 4:5 mean?

An older man near the end writes to a younger one, and the first word he leaves him is to stay awake. To watch in all things is to keep a small flame of attention burning behind every event, so that neither praise nor trouble can pull it out.

Ego v. Being

An older man near the end writes to a younger one, and the first word he leaves him is to stay awake. To watch in all things is to keep a small flame of attention burning behind every event, so that neither praise nor trouble can pull it out. Afflictions still come. They are not a sign that something went wrong, only weather passing through a sky that remains.

When a person meets hardship without arguing with it, the strength to carry the work rises on its own. The task he was given does not need a perfect life around it, only a present one. To fulfill what was placed in your hands is simply to do the next thing wakefully, and then the next, until the whole of it has been lived.

Live 2 Timothy 4:5 today

  1. Pick one dull task today, the dishes, the inbox, the drive, and do it with your attention fully on it rather than on getting past it. Let the hour you are actually in be the one you live.
  2. When someone unloads a hard week on you, do not rush them toward the silver lining. Let it be as heavy as it is, which is the help they can actually use.
  3. On a day that goes wrong early, stop waiting for it to improve before you show up for it. Do the next small thing properly, then the one after, and let the weather pass through.

Can I stay awake inside this ordinary hour, exactly as it is?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Hardship is not a sign that something has gone wrong, only the material the day gives you. What blocks the way becomes the way you walk.

Zen

Chop wood, carry water, before awakening and after. The work does not change, only how awake you are inside it.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Do what is yours to do without clinging to how it turns out. The doing stays clean when the outcome stops owning you.
