Acts 18:10 Meaning For I Am with You

for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city.

What does Acts 18:10 mean?

There is a presence with you that was never born and cannot be threatened. It is closer than your thoughts, deeper than your fear, the silent I am that remains when everything you call yourself is stripped away.

Ego v. Being

There is a presence with you that was never born and cannot be threatened. It is closer than your thoughts, deeper than your fear, the silent I am that remains when everything you call yourself is stripped away.

When you rest in that presence, the fear that another could truly harm you begins to loosen. What can be wounded is only the fragile self the mind builds from opinions and memories. The awareness in which all of this appears cannot be touched by anyone, and once you know yourself as that, fear of harm has nothing left to stand on.

  1. Today, when a thought about what someone thinks of you arrives, let it sit there without answering it. You can watch it, which means you are not it.
  2. If someone is short with you, give them the benefit of the doubt out loud. You can be kind without first making sure you are safe.
  3. When a critical email or message lands, read it twice and feel where it stings. Then ask whether the thing that was hurt is you, or only your idea of yourself.

What part of me is actually at risk here, and what part of me was never in danger?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The mind that is undisturbed is a fortress, and a person has no stronger refuge. Things touch the surface of us and stand outside, unable to get in.

Hinduism · the Bhagavad Gita

Weapons cannot cut it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it. What you most truly are was never the part that can be damaged.

Buddhism

Praise and blame, gain and loss, these winds blow through every life. The one who is settled is not moved by them, like a solid rock in the wind.
