EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Guidance rarely arrives in the noise of the thinking mind. It comes in the night, in the stillness beneath thought, where a deeper knowing can be heard. And its root is almost always the same: do not be afraid.

Fear is the ego contracting, wanting you small and silent, holding back what wants to move through you. One silence is deep and alive; another is only fear clenching the throat. To speak and not hold your peace is to let presence, not fear, decide what you do. When fear no longer governs, what is true in you expresses itself freely, because nothing is left inside to block it.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Fear tells a person to hold his tongue, and the counsel almost always sounds like prudence. Say nothing, keep the peace, and avoid the danger that comes to anyone who speaks plainly in a hostile place. The command that arrives in the night reverses this exactly. Be not afraid, and do not stay silent.

To speak the truth is to risk everything the silence was protecting, and the risk has teeth. Yet the greater danger is the rot that sets in when a person swallows what he knows to be so. Say it anyway. A life is set right not by the words a man kept safe inside him but by the ones he was frightened to speak and spoke.
