EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A man walks toward the one place he has most reason to fear, and he admits he does not know what waits for him. Still he goes, bound in the spirit, moved by something deeper than his own calculating will. The mind cannot bear this. It wants the whole road mapped before the first step, and when the future stays hidden it fills the emptiness with dread.

But see what is actually here. He is walking, breathing, alive in this moment, and the next has not yet come. You do not need to know what will befall you to be at peace. You need only to be fully present to the step you are taking now, and let the unknown stay unknown until it arrives.

  1. If you are waiting on something you cannot control, a test result, a reply, a decision someone else is making, let yourself feel your feet and your breath for the length of one slow minute instead of running the scenarios again.
  2. When someone asks you what is going to happen and you honestly have no idea, say that out loud instead of inventing a confident answer. Being unsure next to another person is lighter than being unsure alone.
  3. In the middle of a day where the next hour is unclear, do only the thing in front of you: the one email, the one dish, the one turn in traffic. Let the rest stay blank until it shows up.

What part of tomorrow are you trying to see before it is willing to be seen?

Tao Te Ching

The one who travels well does not fix the road ahead. He meets each bend as it comes, and because he grips nothing, nothing blocks him.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You do not control what the day will bring, only how you stand in it. Ask for things to be as they are, and the unknown stops being an enemy.

Zen

A student asked what the practice was. The teacher said: when you walk, walk. The next step holds everything you need to know.
