EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You can know hardship lies ahead and still move toward it without dread. The difference is inner acceptance. When you stop demanding that your path be free of difficulty, the difficulty loses its power to disturb the peace within you.

Bonds and afflictions may await. Pain is part of taking human form in this world, yet suffering is something added, the mind's refusal to accept what is. When you meet the hard things without inner resistance, they remain hard, but they can no longer disturb the peace within you, and so one can walk knowingly toward affliction and remain unbroken.

Buddhism

Dukkha: Suffering Dukkha is the pressure built into every conditioned life. Chains and hardship stand waiting at the end of the road to Jerusalem, arriving the way weather arrives for anyone traveling far enough. They are not an interruption of the mission but the cost of walking it, and hearing about them in advance takes away their power to ambush.

Bandhana: Bondage Bandhana is the tie that fastens a being to more becoming. Iron on the wrists is the lighter of the two bonds waiting in those cities; the heavier one is whatever a person cannot bear to lose. A prisoner who wants nothing from his jailers sits in the cell more freely than the guard who is afraid of losing his post.

Saṃvega: Urgency Saṃvega is the shock of seeing clearly, turned into motion. A warning repeated in city after city could easily curdle into dread; here it works as a deadline, moving him toward Jerusalem faster rather than slowing him. News about what is coming is useful in exactly this way: it tells you how much time is left to finish the work in hand.

Adhiṭṭhāna: Resolve Adhiṭṭhāna is a determination held steady while conditions argue against it. The decision was made before the details arrived, so each city's testimony meets an answer already given rather than a question reopened. The warnings become an accounting of the price, and the price has been agreed to.

Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength to take rough treatment without striking back or buckling. The afflictions ahead will be met one day at a time by a man already beaten and jailed at Philippi, who knows the weight he can carry. Endurance of this kind is quiet work: staying put, keeping the mind level, letting hardship pass through without lodging.

Live Acts 20:23 today

  1. If you already know a hard conversation or a hard week is coming, stop rehearsing your defense and just say to yourself, plainly, this is going to be hard and I can be there for it.
  2. When someone tells you bad news, resist the urge to immediately fix it or soften it. Sitting with them in the actual size of the thing is more useful than making it smaller.
  3. The next time something goes wrong under a deadline, a crashed file, a delayed train, a meeting that turns, let the first ten seconds pass without the inner complaint. Then handle it.

Where are you spending energy fighting something that has already happened?

What stands in the way becomes the way. The obstacle is not an interruption of your life, it is the material your life is made of today.

The first arrow is the pain itself. The second arrow is everything you add to it: the protest, the replaying, the why me. Only the second one is optional.
