To awaken is to have your eyes opened for the first time, to see that you have been living in a kind of darkness, asleep in the endless commentary of the mind. That darkness is not an enemy with horns. It is simply unconsciousness, identification with thought, the state in which the ego rules unchallenged.
Turning toward the light means turning toward presence, toward the awareness that has always been shining beneath your thinking. In that turning, the past loses its grip and what you did while asleep no longer defines you. This is the real forgiveness, and the inheritance you receive is the recognition of the aware presence you have always been beneath the thinking mind.
