Ego v. Being

A man certain of his mission is struck down, and in the trembling and astonishment his whole knowing collapses. Out of that emptied place comes a wholly different question. No longer what will I do, but what would you have me do. The proud self that had all the answers is suddenly, blessedly, undone.

And the reply asks only the next small step: rise, go into the city, and there it will be shown. He is not handed the plan. He is asked to move forward in not-knowing and trust that the way reveals itself as he goes. When the old certainty falls away, life begins to guide you one present step at a time.

  1. Instead of planning your whole week in your head before you get out of bed, do only the next honest thing. Make the coffee. Open the one email. Let the rest stay unanswered a little longer.
  2. Ask someone close to you what would actually help them today, and then do what they say rather than what you assumed. Letting their answer surprise you is the whole point.
  3. When a decision at work has no clear answer yet, say out loud that you do not know yet and take the one small step you can see. Not knowing is not failing.

What are you refusing to start because you cannot yet see the whole way through?
