Amos 3:7 Meaning Surely the Lord Yahweh Will Do Nothing

Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.

What does Amos 3:7 mean?

ʿUbūdiyya: Servanthood Servanthood means belonging to God with nothing held back. A person in that position has no plan of their own left to protect, which makes them safe to tell things to.

ʿUbūdiyya: Servanthood Servanthood means belonging to God with nothing held back. A person in that position has no plan of their own left to protect, which makes them safe to tell things to. God's confidences land on people who want nothing out of them, the way you confide in a friend with no stake in it. Nearness of that kind comes with having let go, not with being important.

Sirr: The innermost heart Sufis use sirr for the deepest point in a person, quieter than thought and further in than feeling. A word from God lands there first, below the level where you argue with yourself, and the language for it comes later. Being handed something at that depth is closer to being trusted by a friend than to learning a fact.

Kashf: Unveiling Ibn Arabi's word kashf means a covering lifted off something already there. Nothing gets added in that moment; the covering always sat on the human side, over eyes not steady enough to look. Being let in on what God is doing changes the person seeing, while the work itself was moving the whole time.

ʿIlm ladunnī: Knowledge that comes straight from God The Quran speaks of knowledge from God's own presence, and al-Ghazali treats it as knowledge nobody taught you. It arrives whole, skipping the steps you would normally take to get there, so you cannot show your work. That puts a person in a hard spot: sure of what they know, with nothing to hand someone who asks how. Saying it out loud takes nerve, since the only backing is the one who told you.

Amāna: The trust The Quran tells of a trust the mountains refused and the human being took on. Once you have been told something, you carry it, and pretending you were never told stops being possible. Closeness has a cost folded into it: knowing early makes a person answerable for what they do with the knowledge.

Live Amos 3:7 today

  1. Sit for two minutes before you open your phone in the morning, with no goal and nothing to get out of it. Let the quiet be the whole point, not a technique for having a better day.
  2. When a friend tells you something they have told almost no one, do not immediately offer advice or a story of your own. Carry it quietly afterwards, including the part where you never bring it up again.
  3. If you know something true that will be awkward to say in a meeting or a group chat, say it simply, without a long defense. You may have nothing to back it up except your own clear read, and that is sometimes all anyone gets.

What has someone trusted me with that I have been treating as something to use rather than something to carry?

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and you begin to see how things actually move. Empty of your own agenda, you become the kind of person life can show something to.

A cup only holds tea if it is empty first. What makes someone able to receive is the space, not the status.

The teaching warns against using what you have been given as a crown to wear or a spade to dig with. Being entrusted with something puts a weight on you, not a feather in your cap.
