The worst poverty is spiritual. A people who ignore God's word long enough may find the word withdrawn, and the silence that follows is itself the judgment.

CATHOLIC

Hunger is the right image because a person starving does not lose the appetite; he loses the food. Souls are built to be fed by God and go on aching when nothing arrives. This is why the Church guards preaching and Scripture so carefully, and why a parish that has grown casual about them may not feel the loss for years, and then feel nothing else.

MANIFESTATION
A day comes when the deep hunger is not for food or comfort but for one thing only, the direct, first-hand experience of God. People will have sermons, books, and creeds enough, and still starve, because none of that is the awakening itself. What they crave is the promise made flesh in them, God known from the inside rather than heard about.
That famine is the ache for the moment the buried life rises and reveals itself as your own. Second-hand religion cannot feed it. A person may steady himself meanwhile by holding the feeling of being already whole, yet the hunger points past even that. What it wants is the thing itself: to meet God firsthand and find that the meeting happens within.
Catholic lens
If I stopped filling every quiet moment, what would I find I am hungry for?
The reed flute cries because it was cut from the reed bed. The ache itself is the proof of where you came from and what you were made to be filled by.
The hungry ghosts have throats too narrow to swallow. They are pictured eating constantly and never being fed, which is what endless consuming without nourishment looks like.
Lead me from darkness into light, from death into life. The prayer assumes a hunger for what is real that nothing smaller will quiet.
