Amos 8:12 Meaning They Will Wander From Sea to Sea

They will wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they will run back and forth to seek Yahweh’s word, and will not find it.

What does Amos 8:12 mean?

Running from sea to sea is the mind's oldest strategy for avoiding what is already here. As long as there is somewhere else to go, another teacher, another scripture, another horizon, the search can continue forever without arriving, because the searching itself is the barrier.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Running from sea to sea is the mind's oldest strategy for avoiding what is already here. As long as there is somewhere else to go, another teacher, another scripture, another horizon, the search can continue forever without arriving, because the searching itself is the barrier. A man crosses the whole earth looking for water and dies of thirst standing in the river.

The famine belongs to the seeker, not to the world; nothing has been withheld. The word cannot be found because it is not an object lying in some direction, waiting at the end of a journey. It is heard the moment the running stops.

Live Amos 8:12 today

  1. Today, resist starting one more search, a new app, a new plan, a new course that will finally sort you out. Sit still with the restlessness for a while and see what it actually is.
  2. When someone asks how you are, answer from this moment instead of from where you are headed. Nothing about arriving, nothing about soon, just now.
  3. When the day feels empty and your hand reaches for the phone to be somewhere else, stay where you are for one minute. Hunger in the middle of plenty belongs to the running, not to the day.

What have I been crossing oceans to find while standing right in it?

The same truth in other traditions

Kabir

The musk is in your own body and you wander the world sniffing for it. The seeking is the only thing keeping you from it.

Tao Te Ching

Without going out the door, everything can be known. Running farther takes you no nearer.

Zen

The pilgrim walked a thousand miles and arrived at his own doorstep. The journey was the obstacle.
