who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of the Son of his love,

What does Colossians 1:13 mean?

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The power of darkness is not out in the world. It is the unconscious grip of thinking that runs your life while you take those thoughts to be you. In that state you react and you suffer, and you cannot see it, because you are inside it.

To be delivered is simpler than you imagine. The moment you notice the anxious mind instead of being lost in it, a space opens, and you stand in awareness rather than drown in thought. That awakened state, present and clear, is the kingdom you were carried into, and it is not a place you reach later but a way of being here now.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Darkness has no substance of its own, which is why no one has ever succeeded in beating it out of a room. Unawareness works the same way: fighting the mind feeds it, since the fighter is the mind divided against itself, and the moment watching begins the whole apparatus loses its power without a struggle.

Being carried across is a change of center, not of place. The same man stands in the same room with the same history, and yet he is no longer identified with the voice in his head, and what ruled him yesterday moves across him like weather. Nothing was taken from him except the belief that he was that voice.

Live Colossians 1:13 today

  1. The next time anxiety rises, try saying inwardly, there is worry here, instead of I am in trouble. That small gap is the whole difference.
  2. When someone pushes your buttons, feel the heat come up and do not act on it for ten seconds. You will usually find you had a choice you could not see before.
  3. Set one alarm on your phone today labelled nothing but a pause, and when it rings, stop for a breath and feel yourself in the room. Freedom is available in that one breath.

Which thought have you been treating as the truth about your life?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Satipatthana

The teaching is to see anger as anger and fear as fear, as it arises. The seeing itself loosens the grip, because you are no longer inside the thing.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You have power over your own mind and not over events. The moment you remember that, you are standing somewhere else than in the panic.

Zen

Thoughts come and go like birds across the sky. Trouble starts only when you believe you are the birds.
