Colossians 1:19 Meaning For All the Fullness Was Pleased

For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him,

What does Colossians 1:19 mean?

A hidden treasure gains nothing by staying buried; its worth is known only when it is brought into the light and looked upon. All the fullness chose one place to be seen entire, the way the whole sky comes to rest in a still pool without growing any smaller.

SUFISM

Sufism

A hidden treasure gains nothing by staying buried; its worth is known only when it is brought into the light and looked upon. All the fullness chose one place to be seen entire, the way the whole sky comes to rest in a still pool without growing any smaller. The fault this meets is the itch to ration the divine, to imagine God arrives only in scraps.

The cure is contentment, to stop demanding fragments and receive the whole where it has chosen to appear. God is present as that willing fullness, delighting to dwell and to be found.

Live Colossians 1:19 today

  1. Take one ordinary thing today and let it be entirely enough, a meal eaten without a screen, a walk with no podcast. Do not go looking for the better version of it.
  2. Give someone your whole attention for ten minutes instead of a distracted hour. Whole in a small space beats scattered across a large one.
  3. When you feel short of time, money or help, stop and receive what is actually here before deciding it is not enough. Let the accounting come after the receiving.

Where have I been asking for scraps of something that is already here in full?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 46

The teaching says no fortune is better than knowing you have enough. Wanting more arrives even when the thing in front of you is whole.

Zen saying

The whole moon fits in a drop of water without shrinking. Smallness is no limit on what can be present.

Buddhism · the second noble truth

Suffering grows out of the thirst that never settles, the mind demanding the next piece while the present one goes unseen. The relief starts when the demanding stops.
