Ego v. Being

Separation is the great illusion, the belief that you are a fragment cut off from the whole. All suffering grows from it. It is undone not by thinking your way to unity but by a kind of dying, the surrender of the small separate self the cross has always stood for.

When that false center gives way, the division falls apart. Earth and heaven, the self you defended and the God you longed for, are one undivided whole. Peace is not something added. It is what remains when the sense of separateness dies and the wholeness that was always there is recognized.

Live Colossians 1:20 today

  1. Pick one thing today you have been defending in your head, a position, a grudge, a version of a story, and quietly set it down. See how light the afternoon gets.
  2. With one person, be the one who drops it first. Say the plain sentence, you may be right, and mean it. The fight usually needs both of you to keep going.
  3. When a meeting turns into winning and losing, let your idea go unclaimed if it serves the room. Nothing real is lost when you stop guarding the border.

What are you still holding apart from yourself, and what would it cost to let it back in?

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 22

Yield and you are whole. What refuses to bend breaks, and what lets go of its own importance finds nothing left to defend.

Buddhism

Suffering grows from clinging to a separate self. When that grasping relaxes, the division it was protecting turns out never to have existed.

Sufism · Rumi

Die before you die, the Sufis say, meaning let the small defended self go now, and find yourself part of everything you thought you were apart from.
