Colossians 1:21 Meaning You

You, being in past times alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil deeds,

What does Colossians 1:21 mean?

The distance came from the mind, not from the ground of being itself. A person cut off in thought builds an enemy out of the world and then lives at war with it.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The distance came from the mind, not from the ground of being itself. A person cut off in thought builds an enemy out of the world and then lives at war with it. The break never happened. It lived only in a stream of grievance and judgment that made every face across the room a threat.

When that noise quiets, the old separation dissolves, and what felt like enmity turns out to have been a misunderstanding held in the head. Reconciled means the split closes and a person comes home to what was always whole beneath the thinking.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The estrangement described is entirely inward, a mind at war with itself through its own negative thoughts and the deeds those thoughts produce, for the enemies here are not other people but the hostile contents of a person's own consciousness. The mind is the father, the thoughts its children, and the wicked works the grandchildren that follow from them, so alienation runs down this line from a corrupted inner source into action. Reconciliation is the healing of that inner division, the mind brought back into agreement with the higher self it had opposed, which the tradition says was wanted as imitation and action rather than worship and praise.

What is mended is the split inside a single person, not a quarrel with a distant God. The enemy was always the man's own thinking, and the peace comes when that thinking turns from wicked works to lived alignment. The meaning is clear: your worst opponent was your own negative mind, and reconciliation is making peace within yourself.

Enemies: your own negative thoughts, the hostile contents of your consciousness Mind: the father, from which thoughts come as the child and deeds follow as the grandchild

Live Colossians 1:21 today

  1. Write down the story you have been telling yourself about someone, then read it back as what it is, a story you wrote. The grievance looks different in your own handwriting.
  2. Reach out to one person you have gone quiet on. One ordinary message, no case to make, no apology speech. Most distances are thinner than they look.
  3. When you walk into a room certain of what people think of you, drop the assumption and just meet whoever is actually there. Half the enemies in a day are built in the head.

Who have you been at war with only in your own mind?

Take away the judgment and you take away the complaint, and the injury goes with it. The hurt was in the opinion more than in the event.

What we are is made by what we have thought. Hold the thought he wronged me and it keeps the wound open, and it is the thought, not the wound, that does it.

A man so frightened of his own shadow and footprints ran faster and faster to escape them, and ran until he dropped dead. He never thought to stand still in the shade.
