Colossians 3:24 Meaning Knowing That From the Lord You Will

knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

What does Colossians 3:24 mean?

Actions are only by intentions: the aim inside decides what a deed comes to: A line from the Prophet that the tradition never stops repeating. Two people can do the same job in the same hours, and it still comes to different things, depending on what each of them was aiming at.

Actions are only by intentions: the aim inside decides what a deed comes to: A line from the Prophet that the tradition never stops repeating. Two people can do the same job in the same hours, and it still comes to different things, depending on what each of them was aiming at. For someone whose work is dull and goes unnoticed, that shifts the weight of a whole day. The task stays the same size; the aim behind it decides what it adds up to.

Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity: Keeping one aim in the work and no second one. Al-Ghazali spends pages on how quietly a second aim slips in: hoping someone notices, wanting to be thought reliable, waiting for thanks. When those hopes go unmet, the effort starts to feel wasted, and it quietly drops off. One aim keeps the work steady, because it never depended on being seen.

Worship God as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, He sees you: nothing goes unwitnessed: The Prophet's answer when asked what excellence looks like. Work that nobody checks tends to slacken, and most people grade their effort by how likely they are to be caught. Under a gaze that never lapses, the gap between watched and unwatched hours closes. The hidden parts of a job end up getting the same care as the parts on display.

ʿUbūdiyya: Servanthood: Belonging to God as your first employment. Ibn Arabi treats this position as an honor rather than a humiliation. Someone who takes orders all day from people who can be unfair often feels that the arrangement is now who they are. A deeper service running underneath the visible one settles the question of who you finally answer to, and the daily orders shrink back into being only orders.

Tawakkul: Reliance on God: Leaving the question of your provision with God. Sufis describe the hand that pays you as a channel, with the water coming from further back. Work that earns no thanks and no fair wage leaves people feeling cheated, and the resentment eats at the work itself. Someone who trusts that the account is kept elsewhere can keep working well without needing today's payment to come out even.

Live Colossians 3:24 today

  1. Pick one job today that nobody will ever thank you for, washing the dishes, clearing out the inbox, fixing something small, and do it as carefully as if your favorite person were going to see it. Then let it stay unseen.
  2. When you do something kind for someone, a ride, a favor, a long reply to their message, skip the part where you wait for them to acknowledge it. If you catch yourself checking whether they said thanks, that is the second aim showing up, and you can just set it down.
  3. In the meeting or the stressful shift where someone talks down to you, remember that taking their instruction is not the same as belonging to them. Do the task well, keep your own standard, and let their tone be only their tone.

Where is my effort quietly dropping off because nobody is watching?

Bhagavad Gita 2

Do the work that is yours to do, and let go of your grip on what it will get you. The action stays whole; the hunger for the result is what bends it out of shape.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He kept reminding himself that a good act needs no audience, because the good is already in the doing. Asking "and what do I get for this?" turns a clean deed into a transaction.

Pirkei Avot 2

Work as if the one you answer to is in the room, because in a sense he is. The rabbis add that the wage is not settled at the end of the shift, so steady effort is never wasted effort.
