Colossians 3:3 Meaning For You Died

For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

What does Colossians 3:3 mean?

The self that dies here is the one made of thought and story, the personality forever anxious about its own survival. When you stop taking that self to be who you are, it is as though you have already died, and the fear that gripped it loosens its hold.

Ego v. Being

The self that dies here is the one made of thought and story, the personality forever anxious about its own survival. When you stop taking that self to be who you are, it is as though you have already died, and the fear that gripped it loosens its hold.

What remains is a life that was never on the surface to begin with. It is hidden, safe in a depth the mind cannot reach or damage. Your true life is not the collection of roles and memories the ego clings to; it rests in Being itself, in the presence that circumstances can neither create nor take away. To find it, you let the smaller self go, and discover you were held all along in something that cannot die.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

You are called dead because you are asleep. Not resting, but sunk in a forgetting so deep you have lost all memory of who you are, and you mistake the small mortal figure for yourself. That is the death being named here, and everyone alive is under it.

Your life is not gone. It is hidden inside you as Christ, which is your own genuine life lying asleep, waiting. Christ is not a technique and not a being off in the sky; he is the life that is buried in you now, destined to wake and stand up wearing your name. To say your life is hidden with Christ in God is to say the one you truly are lies quiet inside you, out of sight for a while, and will rise as you when the sleeper finally stirs.

SUFISM

Sufism

Die before you die: the self is let go of first Sufis repeat this line as a saying of the Prophet, and the dying it names happens while a person is still eating breakfast and going to work. Something inside stops: defending their name, keeping score, pushing to come out ahead. The life that continues afterward runs without that constant push.

Fanāʾ: Passing away of the self Al-Ghazali writes about the moment a person's sense of running things burns away. Hearing that an old life has ended can feel like being wiped out, with nothing left to stand on. Only the habit of saying mine goes, mine about the work, the progress, even the goodness, and the person stays, without the ownership.

Baqāʾ: Remaining in God once the self has passed Junayd paired this with the passing away, as its second half. After the self-run life ends, the living carries on, and its source sits outside anything the person built. Patience, warmth and steadiness stop feeling like personal achievements. They arrive more like water through a pipe someone else laid.

Al-Bāṭin: The Hidden, one of God's names The Quran names God the Outward and the Inward, and Ibn Arabi returns to that pairing constantly. A life kept inside the Hidden leaves a person nothing to show, to others or to themselves. Any measure of progress stops working, and the blankness feels like loss, though the life is being held out of sight.

Sirr: The innermost secret, the point only God sees Sufis use this word for the deepest place in a person, further in than their own inspection reaches. Someone can search themselves for signs of a new life and come up empty, because the searching happens a floor above where it sits. Failing to find it proves nothing about whether it is there. A person can carry something they cannot examine, the way a seed keeps working underground.

Live Colossians 3:3 today

  1. Try one hour today without checking how you are doing, no refreshing the numbers, no scanning for who replied. See what your mood does when it is not being scored.
  2. Let someone be wrong about you and leave it there. You do not have to correct the record in the group chat for your life to be fine.
  3. In a meeting or a hard conversation, when you feel the urge to protect your image, drop it and just be useful. The thing that felt at risk was mostly a reputation in your own head.

What am I spending energy to protect, and what would be left of me if I stopped?

Tao Te Ching 13

The one who has stopped guarding a self has nothing left that fear can threaten. What cannot be injured no longer needs defending.

Buddhism

The teaching of no-self is not that you vanish, but that the thing you were anxiously protecting was never a solid object. Seeing that, the grip relaxes.
