Daniel 2:31 · World English Bible
You, O king, saw, and behold, a great image. This image, which was mighty, and whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and its appearance was terrifying.
A huge and shining figure standing before the sleeping king did not come from the day's affairs. Such images rise from the oldest layer of the mind, the layer we share with everyone who has ever lived, and they arrive with a weight far greater than any ordinary thought.

The figure terrified him because it dwarfed his small waking self. When something that large climbs up from the depths, the first feeling is fear, for the everyday self meets a power it did not make and cannot command. The dream was showing the king a force at work beneath his throne and beneath his own mind.

What has shown up in you lately that you have been too quick to call nothing?
The small self that plans and worries is not the whole of you. Behind it stands something vast and unmade, and meeting it the first time feels less like comfort than like standing at the edge of a cliff.
A man dreams he is a butterfly, and on waking cannot say which one is the dreamer. The dream is not a lesser reality visiting him, it is a wider one, and it leaves his certainty about himself shaken.
You are a small part of something immense that was moving long before you arrived and does not take its orders from you. Remembering this humbles the part of you that thought it was in charge.
