The tree cut down is the awareness a person has spread through the world, its branches and leaves and fruit the whole outer life he had built around one old idea of himself. When that self is felled, everything sheltering under it scatters, the beasts and the birds, all the borrowed thoughts and comforts that lived off the former state. This is not ruin. It is the clearing that has to come before a new self can rise.
God descends into a life as this cut-down tree and rises again as the individual man, so the felling is the beginning of birth, not the end of it. The stump remains, and from that stump the next state grows. A person passes through the loss of who he was on the way to who he is becoming. What looks like destruction is the ground being cleared for the self you are ready to assume.
