The whole arrangement of power, its rise and its collapse, unfolds so that the living may come to know one thing: that no separate self is truly in charge. The ego builds its kingdom and calls itself king, and then the ground shifts and the crown is handed to another, often the least likely. Every empire the mind constructs is on loan.
Even the lowest being raised to a throne serves this teaching, for it shows that position is given, not seized, and can be given to anyone. When you see that the deeper intelligence, not your striving will, arranges the flow of events, the frantic grip of control loosens. You stop mistaking yourself for the ruler and begin to rest in the presence that was governing all along.
