EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A person can be surrounded by more than they need and still feel poor. The eye keeps sliding past what is here toward what is not yet had, and the abundance of all things sits unfelt in front of them. Such is the quiet hunger of the wanting mind.

Joyfulness and gladness of heart are what happens when attention finally rests in the present moment and takes in what is already given. Service done in that state is light, because it comes from fullness rather than lack. The ache was never about scarcity. It lived in how little of the plenty they let themselves receive.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Plenty held as owed drains the gladness out of service, and joyless service is the beginning of losing the plenty.

Abundance is the harder test, because the more that arrives, the faster it converts from gift into baseline. What thrilled a person in the first year is assumed by the third, assumption kills gladness of heart, and gladness was the fuel that made serving Yahweh feel like privilege rather than a bill coming due. Remove it and the same obedience continues as obligation, and obligation is a state nobody sustains for long.

That chain ends in ruin without any help from scarcity. The emotional return on identical plenty had already fallen to nothing, and people do not guard what they no longer feel anything for. The cost is the plenty itself, plus all the gladness that was sitting inside it the whole time and never taken.

Live Deuteronomy 28:47 today

  1. Before you start eating your next meal, put the phone face down and take the first three bites with nothing else happening. Taste the food that is actually in your mouth instead of the scroll.
  2. Tell one person today something you appreciate about them that you have never said out loud, not a compliment about what they did for you, just what is already good about having them around.
  3. When the wanting kicks in, the new thing, the better job, the different week, pause and name three things in the room that you already have and would hate to lose. Then go back to work from there.

What is already in my life that I have stopped letting myself enjoy?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 33

The one who knows when enough is enough is already rich. Wealth is not a quantity but a recognition.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not spend your life wishing for what you lack. Train yourself to delight in what is already in your hands, and you will never be poor.

Zen

A student asked the master about the secret of his contentment. He said he eats when he eats and walks when he walks, fully, instead of eating while reaching for the next meal.
