Refuse to serve what is highest and you do not become free. You fall to serving something far worse. The man who will not carry the light yoke of responsibility ends up under a yoke of iron, hungry and stripped of everything. Whatever moves into the vacuum his abdication left behind becomes his new master.

Consider the terrible logic of avoided obligation. Order forms the precondition of a decent life, and when you abandon the disciplined burden that dignifies you, hunger and want and enemies rush in to command you instead. Everyone serves something. The only choice is whether you serve what elevates you or what devours you.

Live Deuteronomy 28:48 today

  1. Name the thing you have been avoiding, the call, the form, the conversation, the number you will not look at. See what has moved in to fill the space your avoidance left: the dread, the scrolling, the 1 a.m. worry. Then do the first small piece of it today.
  2. Tell one person what you are going to carry this week and ask them to check in on Friday. Saying it out loud to another human makes it much harder to quietly hand yourself over to the easier master.
  3. In the hour you usually give away to your phone, keep the hard thing in front of you instead. Not forever. Just this once, so you learn you can pick the weight rather than have it picked for you.

What have I stopped carrying, and what has taken over in its place?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Whoever refuses to govern himself hands the reins to his appetites and his fears, and they are harsher masters than any discipline he avoided. Freedom is not the absence of a master but the choice of a worthy one.

Buddhism · the Dhammapada

The craving you will not face grows like a vine until it carries you where it wants. Untended desire becomes the thing that owns you.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The self can be your closest friend or your worst enemy, depending on whether you have mastered it. Unmastered, it works against you from the inside.
