Deuteronomy 30:20 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 30:20 Meaning To Love Yahweh Your God

to love Yahweh your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him; for he is your life, and the length of your days, that you may dwell in the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

What does Deuteronomy 30:20 mean?

He is thy life. Not a distant deity, but the aliveness within you at this very moment, the Being that animates your breath and your body.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

He is thy life. Not a distant deity, but the aliveness within you at this very moment, the Being that animates your breath and your body. To love this, to cleave unto it, is to give it your full attention instead of losing yourself in the noise of thought.

His voice is not loud. It is the stillness beneath your thinking, the quiet knowing that remains when the mind grows silent. When you rest in that presence, you are already dwelling in the land that was promised. There is nowhere to travel, because life is only ever found here, in the present moment where you already stand.

SUFISM

Sufism

A heart can obey out of fear of losing the land, and that quiet bargaining is its sickness, loving the gift more than the Giver. The cure is to cling for the sake of clinging, the way a stream holds its source without asking what it earns.

The life promised and the God who promises look like two things. But He is called the life itself, so loving Him is not a toll paid to reach the land; it is already the living, and the length of days is that love stretched out ahead.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

The divine is your own aliveness, not a proprietor standing outside who must be pleased. Clinging to something separate produces the anxious religion of the world; what is asked for is intimacy with the life already breathing you.

The voice comes from the same place, quiet, underneath the borrowed opinions of parents and priests and books, and anyone who has sat still long enough has heard it. The land is not geography either. It is the ground a man finds himself standing on when he stops being dragged by the mind and rests as the awareness behind it.

Live Deuteronomy 30:20 today

  1. For one minute before you get out of bed or out of the car, feel yourself breathing without doing anything to it. That aliveness is not something you have to go find.
  2. Spend five minutes with someone with no agenda, no fixing, no advice. Just be in the room with them and let that be the whole of it.
  3. In the middle of a loud day, step out of the meeting or the kitchen for thirty seconds of quiet. The stillness you find there was underneath the noise the entire time.

Where am I trying to get to, when life is only happening here?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

That which breathes in you and knows that it breathes is not something you possess. It is what you are, and loving it is simply turning toward it.

Zen

The still pond reflects the moon perfectly. Stir it and the moon is still there, only you cannot see it for the ripples.

Sufism · Rumi

Stop the noise and there is a voice under it, quieter than thought and nearer than your own skin. Silence is how you hear it.
