CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Courage gets commanded, not felt. The old leader hands the burden to the younger man in front of everyone. The charge is precise: be strong, take heart, go forward into a country no one has yet held. Fear is assumed. The instruction is to proceed anyway, carrying others through.

A man does not wait for confidence to arrive before he shoulders responsibility. He acts, and the strength forms in the acting. The promised land is never inherited by the timid who stayed behind. Move toward the difficult thing, with people depending on you, and the ground becomes yours.

Live Deuteronomy 31:7 today

  1. There is something you keep telling yourself you will do once you feel ready. Start the worst five minutes of it today, exactly as unready as you are.
  2. Say out loud to the people who depend on you, your team, your kids, your partner, that you are taking this on. Saying it in front of them is half of the courage, and it keeps you moving when you would rather stall.
  3. When you are in the meeting and your heart is pounding and nobody is stepping up, be the one who speaks first. Your voice will shake. Say it anyway, and then keep going.

What am I waiting to feel before I begin something I could begin today?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

You do not become brave by waiting to feel brave. You become brave by doing the brave thing while you still feel afraid, until the doing is who you are.

Bhagavad Gita 3

It is better to carry your own burden imperfectly than to perform someone else's flawlessly. Step into what is actually yours to lead.

Zen

The practice is not to arrive ready, it is to begin. Strength arrives inside the work, never before it.
