Deuteronomy 31:8 · World English Bible
Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.
Whatever lies ahead of you, you will not meet it alone or unprepared, for presence goes before you. Every future moment, when it finally arrives, arrives as now, and the same aware stillness that holds you here will be there to hold you then.

EGO & BEING
Whatever lies ahead of you, you will not meet it alone or unprepared, for presence goes before you. Every future moment, when it finally arrives, arrives as now, and the same aware stillness that holds you here will be there to hold you then. This is why you need not be dismayed by what has not yet come.
Dismay is the mind rehearsing disaster, convincing you that you will not be able to cope. But you never face the whole future at once, only this one step, this moment, and in this moment the presence within you has never once failed you. Meet life one moment at a time, and you find the strength for each is already there.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Something goes ahead of a person into the territory he most dreads to enter, and that is the ground of courage. A man stands at the edge of the unknown, the leadership he must assume, the country he has never crossed, and everything in him wants to freeze. The promise made to him is precise. Meaning has already gone before him into the dark, and it will not abandon him there.
Fear at the threshold is the natural response of a creature facing chaos. What answers that fear is the sense that the way forward is not empty, that something reliable precedes you and holds. Walk into the unfamiliar and you are not walking into nothing. Take up the burden ahead of you, because the order you serve has already entered that place and waits for you to arrive.

BUDDHISM
Kalyāṇamitta: The good friend Kalyāṇamitta names the companion who has already walked the road you are about to take. Going before you is plain trailwork: the way is broken open, the footprints are down, and following is all that is left to do. Moses, whose own strength is running out, hands Joshua a road with someone already on it, which is worth more than any instruction he could add.
Saraṇa: Refuge Saraṇa is whatever you put your weight on. Failing and forsaking are the two ways a shelter lets you down: it gives way under load, or it is gone when you turn to look for it. Joshua is crossing into country no one has held, and the shelter promised him is one that travels, holding the whole distance.
Saddhā: Trusting confidence Saddhā is the mind's willingness to move before it can see. Dropping fear on command cannot be managed by effort alone; it follows from confidence already settled in place. Joshua's comes from what he has watched: forty years of a road that never ran out under his feet, which is the ground for trusting the next stretch of it.
Abhaya: Freedom from fear Abhaya is the steadiness left when fear finds no grip. Fear feeds on being alone in an unfamiliar place after dark, and what is offered against it is company rather than courage. Bring to mind who is walking in front of you and the shaking settles, the way a child's does when a hand closes around theirs.
Viriya: Energy Viriya is the effort that keeps a sinking mind up. Discouragement is the slower of the two dangers: fear stops you at the border, while discouragement lets you cross and then sets you down halfway through the long work. Taking and holding a land is years of unremarkable persistence, and this is the faculty that supplies it, the way a fire has to be fed long after it is lit.
Ego v. Being lens
What future am I trying to survive right now, when all I actually have to handle is this one?
The way does not hurry, yet everything arrives in its season. Those who trust the current find it was carrying them the whole time.
Do not let imagined troubles crush you, because you carry no weight but this hour's. If you only ever lift what the present moment hands you, you will find you can lift it.
Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. The next thing is always the thing in front of you.
