Deuteronomy 6:5 Meaning You Shall Love Yahweh Your God

You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.

What does Deuteronomy 6:5 mean?

Nothing in a person is left out of this. The heart is where desires and decisions are made, the soul is the whole living self, and might is strength, energy, and possessions.

Nothing in a person is left out of this. The heart is where desires and decisions are made, the soul is the whole living self, and might is strength, energy, and possessions. Together they say that no part of a human being may be kept back as private territory, which is why it stands as the first and greatest commandment.

Love here is commanded rather than merely hoped for, and that means it can be learned. A person begins with divided affections and gradually gathers the scattered pieces of themselves toward one center through prayer, repentance, and the slow refusal of what pulls them apart. God asks for everything not because He needs it but because a person becomes whole only when they are given away to Him.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Whatever you call the sacred, it cannot be reached through half of yourself. To love with all your heart, all your soul, all your might is to bring the whole of your attention here, holding nothing back in the corners of the mind where worry and wanting still run.

Most love is divided. A part of you is present while another part rehearses the past or leans toward what comes next. When that division ends and you are wholly here, love stops being something you do and becomes what remains when nothing in you is turned away. Loving with everything means holding no part of yourself in reserve, and only what is undivided can meet the sacred fully.

SUFISM

Sufism

The disease this heals is love kept in reserve, a heart that wants God and still holds a corner back for itself. The cure is to let the smaller loves sit inside the larger one instead of beside it, spending feeling, strength, and will on one aim until the withheld corner is gone.

Think of a stream giving all its water to the sea and losing nothing, since the sea was always where it was headed. God asks for everything because He is the ground the other loves stand on.

The part of yourself you hold back is the part that will talk you out of it later.

Whatever stays in reserve sets the ceiling on the result. Heart, soul and might named together seal every exit a person uses to keep a commitment negotiable: feeling, identity, effort. At that scale love becomes a must, and a must changes the state a person lives in; state drives the daily action, and the action compounds into a life built around Yahweh rather than arranged near him.

Loving him partly does not produce a smaller love. It produces a divided inner world, where some part of a person is always arguing for the exit that was left open.

Live Deuteronomy 6:5 today

  1. Find the one area of your life you quietly treat as nobody's business, your spending, your scrolling, your temper in the car, and bring it into the open with God today in one honest sentence.
  2. Give someone your undivided attention for ten minutes, phone face down and out of reach. Loving with your whole self starts with practicing a whole self on one person.
  3. When you are stretched thin and want to hold a little back, name what you are protecting. Then give one small piece of it away on purpose: the last word, the better seat, the extra half hour.

Which part of me have I never offered, and what am I afraid would happen if I did?

The same truth in other traditions

Judaism · the Shema

Jewish practice binds this line to the body and the day: said on waking, said on lying down, written on the doorpost. The whole self is enlisted, not just the believing part of the mind.

Bhagavad Gita 9

Krishna asks for the whole person: what you eat, what you offer, what you do, all of it turned toward one center. Partial devotion is treated as a stage to grow out of, not a destination.

Sufism · Rabia of Basra

Rabia prayed to be free of every motive except love itself, not fear of punishment, not hope of reward. She wanted nothing left over that was still bargaining.
