Ephesians 1:9 Meaning Making Known to Us the Mystery

making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him

What does Ephesians 1:9 mean?

The mystery made known here is the whole plan of salvation, laid down by God inside himself, which means inside man, to unfold in its own fixed order. God fell asleep as a human being and set within that sleep a pattern: to awaken, to become the Father, to be offered up, to ascend.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The mystery made known here is the whole plan of salvation, laid down by God inside himself, which means inside man, to unfold in its own fixed order. God fell asleep as a human being and set within that sleep a pattern: to awaken, to become the Father, to be offered up, to ascend. His good pleasure is that pattern running its course, Christ taking shape in a person stage by stage until the work completes. Nothing here waits on chance or mood. The end was written into the beginning by the one who became you. To grasp the mystery is to see that this unfolding was appointed in advance, and the one unfolding it is your own imagination.

Live Ephesians 1:9 today

  1. On your commute, stop trying to force the next step into place, and let one thing you have been pushing unfold on its own timing.
  2. Talking with a friend who is stuck, resist fixing them, and treat their life as something in progress rather than something behind schedule.
  3. When a project slips and the group chat goes anxious, do the next honest piece of work and let go of needing proof today that it all adds up.

Where am I rushing something that is already quietly on its way?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The Tao does nothing yet nothing is left undone. The unfolding follows its own order whether or not you can see the shape of it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You did not write the plot, only your part in it. Play that part well and the whole arrangement is already serving you.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

The work is already underway through you. Do your part without clutching at the outcome, because the unfolding was set in motion long before you joined it.
