What does Ephesians 3:17 mean?

There is a presence within you deeper than your thoughts and older than your name. To let it dwell in you is not to believe an idea but to become quiet enough to feel the aliveness already there, the awareness looking out from behind your eyes right now.

Ego v. Being

There is a presence within you deeper than your thoughts and older than your name. To let it dwell in you is not to believe an idea but to become quiet enough to feel the aliveness already there, the awareness looking out from behind your eyes right now.

When you are rooted in that inner ground rather than in your opinions, your roles, or the good regard of others, love becomes your natural state, because you are no longer defending a separate self. You grow steady, because this ground beneath you cannot be taken away.

The hope is a guest who will live in the heart, but a house cluttered with pride, resentment, and noise cannot host him. The fault is a heart too crowded and restless to hold anything still. The cure is faith that clears the room and love that sets down roots, so the guest has ground to stay.

A tree in good soil is not visited by the earth; it is fed by it, held from beneath. The One meant to dwell within is no lodger who comes and goes, but the very love the heart is rooted in, closer than the walls built to receive Him.

Live Ephesians 3:17 today

  1. Sometime today, close your eyes for a minute and feel the aliveness in your hands without looking at them. Something in you is awake and has nothing to do with your job title or your history.
  2. In one exchange today, let go of needing the other person to think well of you. Say the plain truth and let their reaction be theirs. You are standing on something steadier than their approval.
  3. When criticism lands, at work or at home, feel your feet on the floor before you answer. Let the words come at the opinion you hold, not at the ground you are standing on.

What am I rooted in today, my opinions and roles, or something underneath them that nobody can take?
