Ephesians 4:23 Meaning And That You Be Renewed

and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

What does Ephesians 4:23 mean?

There is a part of you that thinks incessantly, that carries old grievances and rehearses old fears, and you have taken it to be who you are. Renewal does not come from adding better thoughts to this stream.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a part of you that thinks incessantly, that carries old grievances and rehearses old fears, and you have taken it to be who you are. Renewal does not come from adding better thoughts to this stream. It comes from the awareness underneath the stream, the still space in which every thought arises and dissolves.

When you become present, you step out of the conditioned mind and into the aliveness of this moment. Nothing about your past has to be repaired for this to happen. You are renewed the instant you stop identifying with your thinking and rest as the awareness that was always there beneath it.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

To be renewed in the spirit of the mind is not the same as picking up new opinions. A person can change his ideas and stay exactly the same underneath, because opinions sit on the surface. What matters is the attitude beneath them, the basic stance a person takes toward his own life.

Real renewal reaches down to that root and changes the way a person meets everything. When the deep attitude shifts, the thoughts and choices above it follow on their own. That is why the change asked for here is at the root and not merely in what a person happens to believe today.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Change rarely sticks at the level of the hands. A man drills better habits and still slides back, because the old picture of himself sits underneath, untouched, quietly steering. Renewal starts one layer deeper.

The spirit of the mind is that inner portrait, the settled sense a person carries of who he is. When it gets redrawn, everything downstream shifts on its own, without strain. A fresh self-image does the work that willpower could never force.

Live Ephesians 4:23 today

  1. When you wake up, leave your phone face down and sit still for one minute before the day starts loading itself into your head. You are not trying to think good thoughts, just feeling that you are here.
  2. In a conversation today, catch the moment your mind starts writing its summary of the person while they are still talking. Let that drop, and listen to the actual voice in front of you.
  3. When a stressful email lands and the same old spiral starts up, put both feet flat on the floor and take one slow breath before you reply. The thoughts keep going, but you are standing somewhere quieter than they are.

What would this hour feel like if you were not the voice narrating it?

Zen

Thoughts come and go like clouds, but the sky they move through is never stained by them. Rest as the sky, not the weather.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind can be your closest friend or your worst enemy, depending on whether you are lost inside it or seated quietly behind it, watching.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can wipe the slate of your mind clean at any moment and begin again right now, because your inner life is always within your own reach.
