PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Putting on a new self is not a change of clothing or a set of better manners. It points to a real inward change, the slow growth by which a person becomes the fuller human being they were always meant to be. The old, narrow self is outgrown and something more complete takes its place.

The pattern for this new self is said to be the image of God, and the deep mind does carry such an image, a picture of wholeness at the center of a person. Growing into it means letting that inner center reshape the life, until who someone is on the outside finally matches what they truly are within.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A person puts on a self the way he steps into clothes already cut to fit. The new man is not built from raw willpower; it comes made, patterned after the design its Maker had in mind, upright and whole from the first stitch.

So the change is a fitting, not a fight. When someone accepts the picture of himself as already sound, his goal-striving mechanism steers toward it. He becomes what he agrees to wear.

SUFISM

Sufism

A worn coat can be set down, and so can the old self, the one stitched together from grudges and appetites and the habit of pretending. Setting it down is not a single heroic act but daily honesty, catching the small lie as it forms and letting it go before it hardens.

What is put on instead was cut to God's own pattern, made straight and clean and true. A person becomes a mirror wiped clear, and the likeness that shines back is not his own invention but the image already waiting in him to be uncovered.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Righteousness is what the new self is made of, which is why a person wears it instead of working at it.

Behaviour fought one item at a time loses, because the old label is still standing and every habit reports back to it. A man who defines himself as someone struggling with a temper keeps producing the temper, since the definition needs it to stay true. Change the wearer and the conduct reorganises without a campaign.

This self comes created in God's likeness rather than assembled out of effort, and it is cut from righteousness and truth, so holiness is the cloth and not an assignment issued after the change of clothes. Keeping the old name means defending every improvement, every day, against the person still wearing it.

Live Ephesians 4:24 today

  1. Take one place where your outside life does not match what you actually believe, and move it half an inch today. Small and real beats a whole new plan.
  2. Instead of being impressive with someone, be accurate. Say what you actually think once in a conversation and let the smoother version go.
  3. In a situation where you usually perform, the meeting, the family dinner, the group chat, catch the mask going on and set it down for one exchange. One honest sentence is enough.

Where are you still presenting a version of yourself you no longer are?

There is something seated in the heart of every person, smaller than small and larger than large. Finding it is not acquiring anything new, it is arriving at what you already are.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 28

Return to the simple, uncarved state. The real work is uncovering the original shape, not adding ornament to it.

Sufism · Rumi

He traces his own becoming through form after form: he died as a mineral and rose as a plant, died as a plant and rose as an animal, and each death was a step toward what he already was.
