Ephesians 4:25 Meaning Therefore Putting Away Falsehood

Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.

What does Ephesians 4:25 mean?

A lie is never a private matter kept safely inside the liar. Every falsehood spoken corrupts the shared reality that everyone nearby must stand upon, and it warps the one who tells it.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A lie is never a private matter kept safely inside the liar. Every falsehood spoken corrupts the shared reality that everyone nearby must stand upon, and it warps the one who tells it. Deceive your neighbour and you slowly become a person who no longer knows what is so.

The reason offered here is startlingly practical. A man is not a sealed unit but a limb of a larger body, and a limb that betrays the whole poisons itself along with everything else. Careful speech is self-preservation. Honest words between neighbours strengthen the very fabric that holds all of them upright.

Live Ephesians 4:25 today

  1. Reread one message before you send it today and cut the part that shades the truth in your favor. Even a small softening counts.
  2. Tell one person something true that you have been managing around, how you actually feel, what you actually forgot, what you actually think of the plan. Say it kindly and say it straight.
  3. When someone asks a question you would rather dodge in a meeting or at the dinner table, give the real answer. "I do not know yet" is a real answer.

Where have you been shading the truth to keep things smooth, and what has it cost you?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Noble Eightfold Path

Right speech means saying what is true, at the right time, in a way that does not wound for sport. Words are treated as actions with consequences, not noise.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot 1

The world is said to stand on truth, justice and peace. A person who deceives pulls at one of the pillars everyone else is standing on.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

We are made for each other the way hands are made for one another, so working against your neighbor is working against yourself. Harm to the whole lands back on the limb.
