Ephesians 4:6 Meaning One God and Father of All

one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all, and in us all.

What does Ephesians 4:6 mean?

Tawḥīd: Oneness Oneness is the simplest claim the tradition makes, and it matters most where people have already taken sides. Each side tends to carry its own picture of God, tilted its way, so a disagreement starts to feel like a contest between two owners.

Tawḥīd: Oneness Oneness is the simplest claim the tradition makes, and it matters most where people have already taken sides. Each side tends to carry its own picture of God, tilted its way, so a disagreement starts to feel like a contest between two owners. One source cancels the ownership, and the person you argue with is held by the same hand that holds you.

Rabb al-ʿālamīn: Lord and Sustainer of all the worlds Rabb names the one who raises and feeds what he has made, all of it, with no exceptions. People who have belonged for a long time quietly expect a larger share of him than newcomers get. No length of service buys a bigger portion, and the care that reached you is reaching the stranger and the latecomer at full strength.

Al-Ẓāhir wa-l-Bāṭin: the Outward and the Inward A line of the Quran that Sufis repeat calls God the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward. Most people file him under height alone, running things from far above, which leaves the ordinary day empty of him. The Outward means he meets you in whatever is in front of your face, so the plain hours stop counting as a lower floor.

Nearer to him than his jugular vein: closeness that never lapses The phrase comes from the Quran, and it gets quoted whenever someone feels shut out. Feeling far from God usually gets taken as proof of distance, and the person sets out to cross a gap that was never open. The nearness holds while it is felt and while it is not, and the only thing that moves is where attention has gone.

The lamps are many, the light is one: one source through different people Rumi pictures ten lamps in one room, each a different shape, all giving off a single light. In a mixed group, difference easily reads as rank, and people spend their time comparing shapes. When the light holds the eye, the differences stay without becoming a ladder, and each person carries the same brightness in another shape.

Live Ephesians 4:6 today

  1. Sometime today, in line or at a red light, look at a stranger and say inwardly that whatever holds you holds them at full strength. No length of belonging gets you a bigger share.
  2. In the next disagreement, group chat or kitchen, drop the sense that you are the one who has the right version. You are both being held by the same hand, and that outranks the argument.
  3. When the day is dull, dishes, inbox, waiting room, treat that hour as the place rather than the lower floor. If he meets you in whatever is in front of your face, there are no spare hours.

Where have you been quietly acting like you have a larger claim than someone else?

Tao Te Ching 42

Everything that exists came out of one, and that one is in all of it. The many things are not separate owners of their own origin.

Upanishads · Chandogya

The teaching is that the reality holding the whole world is the same reality in you, and the same one in the person across from you. That you are, too.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

There is one world made of everything, one substance, one law, one truth running through all of it. Which makes the person you argue with a part of the same body you are.
