Ephesians 5:2 Meaning Walk in Love

Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

What does Ephesians 5:2 mean?

Love here is not a feeling that visits and drifts away. Love is a manner of walking, step after ordinary step, and its highest form is sacrifice.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Love here is not a feeling that visits and drifts away. Love is a manner of walking, step after ordinary step, and its highest form is sacrifice. To surrender what you want now for the sake of what you value more becomes the deepest expression of caring for another.

Ordinary life keeps confirming this. A parent gives up sleep, ease, and ambition for a child, and something about the offering rises like a good smell into the air. The willingness to sacrifice on behalf of what one loves is what love looks like once it starts to move in the world.

Live Ephesians 5:2 today

  1. Give up something small today for someone who will never know, take the worse seat, the later slot, the longer line, and keep it to yourself.
  2. Put the phone face down and out of reach for one conversation at dinner or on the drive. Your full attention is the thing people actually want from you.
  3. When you are tired and someone needs you anyway, do the thing before you decide how you feel about doing it. The feeling usually catches up after.

What did you give up this week for someone you love, and did they ever have to know?

Bhagavad Gita 3

Act for the sake of what you serve rather than for what you collect from it. Love moves when the reward stops being the reason.

Buddhism · Metta practice

Goodwill is trained the way a muscle is, extended deliberately toward people you like and people you do not. It is practice, not a mood that happens to you.

Sufism · Rumi

Love is known by what it is willing to lose. Giving up something you wanted is how it proves itself real.
