Ephesians 6:12 Meaning For Our Wrestling Is Not Against Flesh

For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

What does Ephesians 6:12 mean?

The real fight in your life is not with the person who annoys you or the neighbor you resent. Behind the surface troubles the Church sees an unseen battle waged by dark spiritual powers that stir up hatred and despair.

Orthodox

The real fight in your life is not with the person who annoys you or the neighbor you resent. Behind the surface troubles the Church sees an unseen battle waged by dark spiritual powers that stir up hatred and despair. Treat a human being as your enemy, and you have already lost sight of the true one.

This frees you to be gentle with people, because they are not your opponents. In plain words: the deepest struggle is spiritual, so aim your resistance at the darkness itself and stop treating those around you as the thing to defeat.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Your real struggle is not with the people who frustrate you. They are only the surface. Beneath every conflict lies something less visible, the conditioned patterns of the mind that move through human beings, the collective unconsciousness that has ruled this world for ages.

Once you see this, you stop fighting flesh and blood. You recognize that the true adversary is unconsciousness itself, the darkness in the mind. So you meet it not with more struggle but with awareness, because the presence you bring is the one light this old darkness cannot survive.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The struggle is never with people or outward events but with the states of mind that rule you from within. Principalities and powers are moods and convictions set up on high, the fixed assumptions that govern your world from the level of feeling. Flesh and blood are only where those states show themselves; the cause sits above them, in what you have accepted about yourself.

The darkness of this world is the belief that circumstance comes from outside and cannot be changed. To wrestle here is to meet a hostile state and refuse to live from it, replacing it with the assumption you want. The high places are the ruling ideas that shape everything below. A person stops fighting the outer condition and takes hold of the inner state behind it, and when the state is changed, the flesh and blood that reflected it change too.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The real enemy is rarely the person standing in the room. He is only the visible face of something much larger. Behind human conflict move powers that belong to the mind of a whole people, forces that can seize a man and drive him without his knowing it.

These powers are not devils in the sky. They are the dark, unowned energies that live in the depths of the human spirit and, when no one faces them, spill out to possess whole nations. To fight only the flesh-and-blood enemy is to miss the true battle, which is with the darkness moving underneath.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The enemy is never simply the person in front of you. Beneath the human quarrel run vast patterns of malevolence, ways of being that bend whole societies toward cruelty and deceit. These are what a man contends with. Blame the individual and you miss the thing moving through him. The fight is bigger than any single villain.

Evil operates as a spirit. An idea seizes people and turns them into its instruments, and it climbs into the high places where it does the most harm. To fight it you must see it as more than flesh. The battle happens at the level of what people worship and serve. That is where a life is won or lost.

Live Ephesians 6:12 today

  1. Say the name of the person who has been living in your head and let the anger go off them and onto the thing that is actually wrong. They are stuck in it too.
  2. In traffic, in the grocery line, with the person who cut in, assume something hard you cannot see. Give the benefit of the doubt out loud if you can, silently if you cannot.
  3. When the argument heats up at work or at the table, drop the goal of winning against the person and name the real problem you are both facing. Aim at the problem together.

Who have I been treating as the enemy when they were only in the way?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus told himself that people who wrong us act out of a confusion they cannot see, so they deserve correction or pity rather than hatred. The enemy is the error, not the man.

Buddhism

The teaching aims at the three poisons, greed, hatred and delusion, and treats the person in front of you as caught by them rather than as being them. Fight the poison, not the patient.

Tao Te Ching 68

The best fighter is not angry. Rage mistakes the opponent for the problem and loses the clear sight that would have won.
