ORTHODOX

Orthodox

The head is guarded because that is where the fight actually happens. Attacks arrive as thoughts long before they arrive as actions, and a mind that already knows itself rescued is hard to talk into despair.

One piece of the kit cuts back, and it belongs to the Spirit rather than to the soldier. God's words are not a private arsenal to swing at other people; they are wielded against thoughts that lie, and the hand on the handle is not finally yours. Carrying them in memory matters for that reason: a weapon left at home is useless at the hour the accusing voice starts talking.

Live Ephesians 6:17 today

  1. Keep one true line somewhere you can reach it without a screen, written on paper in your wallet or taped inside a cupboard. The accusing voice usually starts when your phone is dead or your hands are full, and you cannot look something up at two in the morning.
  2. When someone you love says the cruel thing about themselves out loud, do not argue with the feeling. Say the one true thing back, plainly, and let it sit there instead of filling the silence with advice.
  3. In the meeting where the message lands wrong and your face goes hot, catch the sentence your head is already writing about you. Answer that sentence first, quietly, before you answer the email.

What does the voice in your head say about you when you are tired, and have you ever once checked whether it is telling the truth?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

The mind is where everything begins, so a thought guarded is an action already decided. What a person dwells on long enough, they become.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You have power over your judgments, not over what arrives, and nearly every injury you feel is the judgment you added. Strike at the opinion and the wound closes.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The untrained mind is its own enemy and the trained mind its closest friend, so the real discipline is turning attention back again and again until it obeys.
