Tyranny extracts, then calls the theft an achievement. Whole cities of stored wealth rose from the broken backs of people forced to work, and the men who cracked the whip counted it as glory. Power turned in on itself always does this. It dresses cruelty in the costume of order and mistakes a prison for a kingdom.

A state that afflicts its own becomes a machine for grinding human beings into monuments. The pyramids of any age look magnificent from outside and monstrous from within. Bricks laid by the suffering of the enslaved hold up nothing that deserves to last, and the empire that forgets this is already rotting under its own weight.

  1. Look honestly at your own calendar for who is carrying more than they should because it is convenient for you, and change one thing about it this week.
  2. Thank the person whose work you usually only see the result of, the one who stayed late, cleaned up, covered the gap. Say what they actually did.
  3. When a deadline tempts you to lean hard on someone, the quiet coworker, the family member who never says no, ask first and accept a no. Results built on someone else's exhaustion do not hold.

Whose effort are you benefiting from without really seeing it?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 75

When the rulers take too much, the people go hungry and the whole arrangement loses its footing. Extraction looks like strength and is the beginning of collapse.

Stoicism · Seneca

A man who holds power by fear lives in fear himself, and the dread runs in both directions. What he built to protect him becomes his cage.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot 2

Be careful with those in power, because they draw people close when it suits them and are nowhere when it does not. The friendship lasts exactly as long as the usefulness.
