Exodus 10:26 Meaning Our Livestock Also Shall Go with Us

Our livestock also shall go with us. Not a hoof shall be left behind, for of it we must take to serve Yahweh our God; and we don’t know with what we must serve Yahweh, until we come there.

What does Exodus 10:26 mean?

Self-Help

Leave yourself something to go back to and you have already decided you will go back.

A partial deal feels like progress and works like a leash. Accept it and the belief riding underneath is that the old arrangement still holds a claim on you, which keeps the body half-turned toward it, which makes every step tentative, and tentative people get marched back.

Not knowing what serving God will require is the normal condition of anyone whose standard has outrun their means. The means get disclosed on the road, after the going has begun, never at the negotiating table beforehand. Hold back one animal and you arrive at the mountain without the one thing the service turns out to require.

  1. If you have started something new, a job, a habit, a way of eating, delete the fallback you kept just in case. The saved contact, the old app, the half-open door.
  2. When you tell someone you are in, be all the way in instead of leaving yourself a quiet exit they cannot see. Half a yes puts the whole weight of it on them.
  3. Under pressure, when the voice says keep a little back so you can retreat if this fails, go the other way and commit the last piece. The thing you held in reserve is usually what the road ends up needing.

What have you kept back just in case, and what is it quietly keeping you from?

Zen

You cannot pour tea into a cup still half full of yesterday's. Empty it first, or you will only ever get a little of the new.

Bhagavad Gita

Act without clinging to what the act will yield. The road discloses what it asks of you only to the one already walking it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You cannot serve two aims at once and hold both whole. Choose, or you will do neither thing well and keep being pulled back.
