Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

What does Exodus 17:6 mean?

Hidden life is locked inside the hard structure of the body, and it does not release itself. The rock is the fixed physical frame, the dense bone and habit a person hardens into, and Horeb is the dry, barren stretch of consciousness where nothing seems to move.

Hidden life is locked inside the hard structure of the body, and it does not release itself. The rock is the fixed physical frame, the dense bone and habit a person hardens into, and Horeb is the dry, barren stretch of consciousness where nothing seems to move. Only a deliberate strike at that solid base opens it.

When the reasoning power drawn up out of the depths acts on the body itself, the sealed waters break loose, and the spirit that was trapped in flesh becomes the very thing that sustains the whole person. The inner faculties look on as what seemed dead stone yields living water.

Rock: the hardened physical frame and set habits a person becomes locked inside Horeb: the dry, desolate region of consciousness where life feels stalled Water: the spirit and life-force sealed in the body, flowing once the body is struck Moses: the reasoning mind drawn up from the depths, leading the powers of the self Elders of Israel: the older, settled faculties that witness the change within

Live Exodus 17:6 today

  1. Pick the habit you are most hardened around, the late scrolling, the skipped meal, the avoided call, and interrupt it once today. Something is behind it.
  2. With someone you have gone flat and routine with, ask a real question instead of the usual exchange. Routine is a kind of stone, and one honest question cracks it.
  3. When today goes dry and nothing feels like it is moving, stay with it instead of distracting yourself out of it. The dry places are often right before something gives.

What in you looks like dead rock and might actually be holding water?

Taoism

Water wears through rock because it keeps coming. The hardest thing yields to the softest thing that will not stop.
