The awakening reason in a person rises to defend the gentler faculties when the harsh, driving impulses try to shove them off from the source. The shepherds who drive the daughters away are the aggressive habits of the lower nature, crowding in to seize the well for themselves. Moses is the drawn-out higher mind, the deliverer newly stirring within, and his standing up is the moment awareness asserts itself and clears the way. Watering the flock is the nourishing of the tender inner powers with living water once the bullying drives are pushed back.

The well is the deep inner source, and the fight over it is the daily struggle in a person to feed the finer faculties before the coarse ones drink everything dry.

Shepherds: the harsh, driving impulses of the lower nature that crowd in and seize the source for themselves Flock: the gentle inner faculties, the tender powers of a person that need watering from the deep well Well: the deep inner source of living water within a person, the spring the whole self draws from

What a person does when they owe nobody anything is the truest statement of who they have decided to be.

Identity outranks circumstance. Whatever a man has settled about himself he keeps acting out, the acting is what people around him see, and what they see decides whether they make room for him. Standing up for strangers' animals is the same protective force that once made a man strike in rage, now aimed at building instead of breaking.

A fugitive has an endless private subject available, which is everything he lost, and a mind at somebody else's watering trough is not at the palace. The water he drew for daughters he did not know bought him a home, a family, and forty years of solid ground. A man who spends his exile on what was taken from him is never invited into anyone's house.

  1. Next time anger or urgency rises and you want to fire off the message right now, wait ten minutes before sending. That pause is you standing up for the quieter part of yourself.
  2. In a conversation today, protect the person who is getting talked over. A simple "hold on, I want to hear the rest of what you were saying" clears the space back open.
  3. In traffic or a slow line, when the irritation shows up, name it silently and let it stand there without feeding it. It is loud but it does not get to drive.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The soul takes on the color of its thoughts, so watch what you keep feeding it. Rough impressions arrive first and loudest, and the work is to not hand them the whole mind.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Guard your mind the way a frontier city is guarded, since what is unguarded is lost. The mind is hard to restrain and goes wherever it wants until it is trained.

Sufism · Rumi

In The Guest House, Rumi says every arriving mood is a visitor to be met at the door. Even the violent ones are received as guests, not as owners of the house.
