Exodus 32:10 · World English Bible

Exodus 32:10 Meaning Now Therefore Leave Me Alone

Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.

What does Exodus 32:10 mean?

Scripture must be taken as an inner event, not an outer god losing his temper, so this heat that rises to consume is the burning away of the lower thoughts that have turned back to the molten idol while the higher self was on the mountain. The wrath is the purging fire of consciousness, not divine cruelty; it wax hot against the crowd of carnal impulses gathered below and reduces them.

What is promised in their place, a great nation raised from the one who stands apart, is the multiplied life that grows in a person once the base worship is burned out and the higher faculty is left to increase.

Live Exodus 32:10 today

  1. When anger rises today, do not post it and do not swallow it. Sit with the heat for five minutes and watch what it is actually burning, usually a story you told yourself, not the person in front of you.
  2. In a group chat or at dinner, when you feel the urge to pile on, stay quiet for one round. Something small and cheap in you dies in that silence, and you will be glad it did.
  3. Under real pressure, when you are about to fire off the email, write it and do not send it. Read it in twenty minutes, keep the one true sentence, and let the rest go up in smoke.

When my anger burns, what is it actually clearing out of me?

It is your own untrained mind that does you harm, more than any enemy. What burns in you is burning something of yours.

When something strikes you, do not run with the first impression. Step back, let it burn out, and see what is actually there.

Sufism · Rumi

The fire you fear is the one cleaning the house. It takes the idols and leaves the room.
