EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Before any name is given, something simply is. When the ground of all life speaks, it does not describe itself by what it owns or does. It says only that it is. This I am is the same stillness that stays awake inside a person while every thought comes and goes.

A man can stand there frightened, unsure of his own worth, and still that presence names itself in him. The deepest thing a person can know about themselves is not their story or their role. Under both of those lies a quiet sense of being alive, and it was there before the story ever began.

Live Exodus 6:2 today

  1. Standing in a grocery line today, instead of reaching for your phone, let yourself feel the plain sense of being alive for the length of the wait. Nothing to fix, just here.
  2. Check in on someone who is doubting themselves right now, and listen without trying to talk them into feeling better. Being steadily present with them says more than any pep talk.
  3. Before a meeting where you feel you have to prove something, take one slow breath and remember that the quiet sense of being you is already here, with or without the result. Walk in from there.

What in you is unchanged by whether today goes well or badly?

The same truth in other traditions

Advaita Vedanta · Ramana Maharshi

He told seekers to hold the question "Who am I?" until every answer fell away and only the sense of being remained. That remainder, he said, is what you were looking for.

Zen

Even when the mind is crowded and anxious, the awareness holding that noise is unshaken, like a mirror that is never stained by what it reflects.

Sufism · Mansur al-Hallaj

He said "I am the Truth," meaning that the one Being was speaking through him, and that the small self he had taken himself to be was not there at all.
