Ezekiel 1:10 Meaning As for the Likeness of Their Faces

As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man. The four of them had the face of a lion on the right side. The four of them had the face of an ox on the left side. The four of them also had the face of an eagle.

What does Ezekiel 1:10 mean?

The 4 living creatures are the 4 powers moving in one nervous system: mind, will, labor, and spirit turning together as a single wheel. The number 4 fixes them to the flesh, the 4 corners of the body's temple, yet each face looks outward at once so a whole person is seen from every side.

Esoteric

The 4 living creatures are the 4 powers moving in one nervous system: mind, will, labor, and spirit turning together as a single wheel. The number 4 fixes them to the flesh, the 4 corners of the body's temple, yet each face looks outward at once so a whole person is seen from every side. Reason governs, courage stands to the right, the working body bears the load, and vision lifts above all of it. These are not beasts in a sky; they are the driving forces alive in one who has awakened them.

Man: the reasoning mind that names and weighs Lion: the courage and royal will seated on the right Ox: the laboring body that carries the daily burden on the left Eagle: the spirit that rises above the flesh and sees far The number 4: the 4 corners of the body, spirit fastened to matter

Live Ezekiel 1:10 today

  1. Before you start anything today, check all four of you at once: what your head thinks, what you actually want, what your body is telling you, and what you can see from a little higher up. If one of them is shouting and the others are silent, that is the problem.
  2. With one person today, let all four show up. Say what you think, say what you want, admit if you are tired, and keep the long view in the room. Most arguments are one face talking while the other three hide.
  3. When pressure lands, a deadline, traffic, a message that stings, ask which face just took over. Courage without the long view starts fights, and the long view without the body never does the work.

Which of my four faces has been doing all the talking lately, and which one has gone quiet?

The same truth in other traditions

Katha Upanishad

The body is the chariot, the mind the reins, the senses the horses, and the self the rider. Let them pull apart and the same body that carried you drags you.

Plato · Phaedrus

The soul is a charioteer with two horses, one spirited and one heavy. Mastery is not killing either horse, it is getting both to pull in the same direction.

Zen

A person is not a mind riding on top of a body. Chopping wood, carrying water, thinking clearly: it is all the same person, all the way through.
