He turned to them so that they could turn: the first move comes from God Sufis repeat this line from the Quran. Someone stuck in the same habits for years often cannot even want to change; the wanting has gone dead. When a pull toward being clean shows up at all, the tradition counts that pull as the gift already arriving, not the price paid for it.

Ṭahāra: Purity Al-Ghazali lays purity out in layers: the body, then the heart cleared of traits like envy and spite, then the heart emptied of all but God. Most people work on the first layer, since anyone can see it and it can be checked off. A person who has kept every rule and still knows their own insides are foul is standing at the layer they cannot reach alone.

Shirk khafī: Hidden idolatry The Prophet called it harder to spot than a black ant on a black stone at night. Money, reputation, a marriage, being thought of as good: any of these can quietly become the thing a life bends around. Someone can be sincere about giving up the obvious attachments and still not see the three or four running the show.

Takhliya: Clearing out Teachers pair it with taḥliya, the adorning that comes after, the way a room is emptied before anything is moved in. A person hoping to become generous or honest while holding on to every old comfort is trying to skip the first half. The stripping that feels like pure loss is the beginning of the work, and the filling is what follows it.

Jilāʾ al-qalb: Polishing the heart The Prophet said each wrong leaves a dark mark on the heart, and turning back rubs it off. Sufis speak of the heart as a mirror: when it is dull, God is no less near, but the person catches nothing of it. Cleaning changes what someone is able to perceive, so a heart made clear can finally feel what was there the whole time.

Live Ezekiel 36:25 today

  1. Name one attachment nobody would criticize you for, being well thought of, being needed, the running total of what you earn, and sit with how much of your day it quietly steers.
  2. Ask one person who sees you up close what they think you actually bend your life around. Then let their answer sit for a day instead of correcting it.
  3. The next time you want something cleared out of you and have no idea how, stop trying to engineer it. Say so plainly, in your own words, and leave the asking there without a plan attached.

What have I kept tidy on the surface because the inside felt out of my reach?

Zen · Platform Sutra

The mind is compared to a mirror whose brightness was never lost, only covered. Nothing is added by the wiping; what was always there becomes visible again.

Bhagavad Gita

Krishna says the self is covered by craving the way fire is covered by smoke and a mirror by dust. Clear the covering and seeing returns on its own.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He told himself to dig inside, where the spring of good lies, and to keep clearing it so it can keep flowing. The work is on the source, not on the surface.
