EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

What has your heart become hard against? The old grievances, the accumulated hurt you carry from the past, form a kind of stone around you. This is not protection. It is a prison, and you have mistaken its walls for yourself.

A new heart is not something you must manufacture through effort. It appears the moment you become present, when awareness loosens your grip on the remembered pain. The stone softens into living flesh, and a new spirit moves in you. You begin to meet each moment freshly, no longer filtering life through the wounds of what already happened.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

To be given a new heart and a new spirit is to be renewed at the very center, not merely improved at the edges. The old heart of stone is the hardened self, set in its patterns, no longer able to be moved. Adjusting behavior cannot fix that, because the change has to reach deeper.

What is described is closer to a rebirth. Something worn out and rigid is taken away, and a living, feeling center is put in its place. A person changed at that depth does not merely act differently. He has become a different person from the inside out.

SUFISM

Sufism

Some hearts have gone to stone, and stone cannot feel the very mercy reaching for it. That numbness is the deep disease, and no one can chisel it out of himself. The one thing within reach is to stop defending the stone and hold still under the hand that offers to change it.

The promise is a gift, not a wage: a heart of flesh handed over, warm and able to ache again. The Giver is present in the giving, so near that the new life and the One who gives it arrive together.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

A heart becomes stone through protection. Each hurt is answered with a layer of defense, and after enough years the man is safe and cannot feel anything, not even his own life passing.

The change is given, not achieved, which means it arrives when a man stops managing himself and allows. Flesh can be wounded, and that is the whole point: the same softness that lets pain in is the only thing that lets joy in, and a heart armoured against one is closed to both. Whoever risks that vulnerability finds his ordinary days turning warm again, for reasons that have nothing to do with what happens in them.

Live Ezekiel 36:26 today

  1. Think of one old grievance you still replay and let yourself feel it without adding the next line of the story. The feeling is lighter than the retelling.
  2. With one person you have been slightly cold toward, be warm today in a small way. A real question, a text, a lingering goodbye.
  3. When someone does the thing they always do, the one that proves your case against them, try meeting this one moment without the file of everything before it.

What have you been protecting that is actually just keeping you shut?

He insulted me, he hurt me: those who carry such thoughts never put the anger down. Those who set the thought aside find it ends.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The best revenge is to be unlike the one who wronged you. Hardening into the shape of your injury is losing twice.

Sufism · Rumi

He wrote that the cure for the pain is in the pain itself. The hurt you keep refusing to feel is the one place the remedy is kept.
