PROTESTANT

Protestant

Flesh names the self running under its own power, not the body and its appetites. Such a self turns out deeds, plural and scattered, where the Spirit grows one fruit.

The four slide toward shamelessness. Adultery breaks a promise made in front of witnesses; sexual immorality covers every use of sex outside marriage. Uncleanness is a condition lived in, filth that stays once the act is over. Lustfulness carried open indecency, a person past caring who was watching. Nobody has to dig for any of it; it surfaces on its own, so a life can be read from the outside.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

What a man does out in the open is the inner picture made visible. The self-image he carries below awareness works itself outward into conduct, and these named acts are that picture become plain. They grow from a portrait, not from stray accident.

Adultery, uncleanness, the whole restless reaching, each traces back to a man who pictures himself as empty and grabs at anything to fill the gap. The behavior is only the symptom. The low self-image underneath is the cause, and changing the act alone leaves the portrait to press out again through some new door. When a different picture takes hold within, different works become manifest without a fight.

Live Galatians 5:19 today

  1. Look honestly at where your eyes and your thumb go when you are tired and alone, and name it plainly to yourself instead of calling it nothing.
  2. Tell one trusted friend the thing you have been managing quietly, and let it be said out loud to a person rather than only admitted inside your own head.
  3. When the late-night pull comes and you are too worn out to argue with it, put the phone in another room and go to bed instead of negotiating.

If someone read my life from the outside this week, what would they see without having to dig?

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Actions leave tracks, and a person's conduct eventually shows plainly what their mind has been feeding on. Nothing stays hidden for long once it is being practiced.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus said not to announce your philosophy but to live it, because what you actually are will show in your behavior without you having to explain it. The fruit speaks before the words do.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 33

The one who masters others has force, but the one who masters himself has real strength. Chasing appetite leaves a person run by it rather than running it.
