Genesis 1:13 · World English Bible

Genesis 1:13 Meaning There Was Evening and There Was Morning

There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

What does Genesis 1:13 mean?

A stage of the inner creation closes with the same rhythm every stage keeps: a going down into darkness and a rising back into light. Evening is the sinking of the inner light, morning its awakening, and the 2 together seal one full turn of the work happening inside a person as consciousness forms itself.

A stage of the inner creation closes with the same rhythm every stage keeps: a going down into darkness and a rising back into light. Evening is the sinking of the inner light, morning its awakening, and the 2 together seal one full turn of the work happening inside a person as consciousness forms itself.

The third day is new life, the resurrection that is a fact of consciousness and not a date in history. It is the sun within a man coming back up after its descent, the light reborn once the down-and-up has run its course. What the old story calls a day of creation is a rhythm of the awakening self completing another round of its own making.

Evening: the inner light sinking down, the descent of consciousness into its dark half Morning: the inner light awakening, the return of consciousness into its bright half The third day: new life and resurrection, the sun within rising again after its descent

Live Genesis 1:13 today

  1. When your energy drops in the afternoon, stop treating it as a problem to caffeinate away. Let the low half happen; it is one side of a turn that comes back up.
  2. If someone you love is in a dark stretch, do not hurry them toward morning. Stay with them in the evening of it and let them know the turn is real.
  3. After something goes badly at work, give it a night before you decide what it means. The judgment you make at the lowest point is never the one you keep.

Where am I calling something a dead end when it is only the dark half of a turn?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 40

Returning is how the Tao moves. Everything that goes out comes back, so the downturn is part of the motion and not a break in it.

Zen · Dogen

He wrote of practice as endless, each day a complete turn of its own. There is no final arrival, only another full round of sinking and rising.

Judaism

The day begins at sunset. The tradition counts the dark half first, treating the descent as the opening of the day rather than its failure.
