In the creation stories told around Israel, people existed to feed the gods, and temples ran on daily meals set before the images. Here the direction runs the other way. God hands the food over, and humanity is the one fed. Seed inside the fruit carries the next crop, so the gift keeps arriving rather than running out.

"Meat" in older English meant food of any kind, not flesh. God's grant is finished the moment He speaks it, before a single day of labor. Every field on earth stands inside it, so no one anywhere eats outside His gift.

Everything that feeds a person is already planted within the mind itself. The seed-bearing growth spread across the whole surface of one's own thinking is given freely, and the spine standing up the center of the body is the trunk from which the real fruit comes. What sustains the inner life is not gathered from outside; it grows on the tree of one's own frame, and the yield that ripens along that inner column is the true nourishment.

The intelligence that faces out over the field of thought looks upon a mind already stocked with everything it needs, so that the energy rising through the trunk of the body becomes the meat by which consciousness lives and renews itself.

Earth: the mind, the whole field over which a person's thoughts are spread Tree: the spine, the standing trunk of the body up which the life-force climbs Face: the intelligence, the awareness that looks out over the field of the mind Seed: the germ of thought that carries the power to grow and feed the inner life

Live Genesis 1:29 today

  1. At your first meal today, pause before the first bite and think about how little of it you made yourself. Say thank you out loud if you can.
  2. Buy or cook something for one person who is not expecting it, a coffee, a plate of leftovers, and hand it over without making a thing of it.
  3. When you catch yourself anxious about not having enough, time, money, help, name three things already in your hands that arrived without you arranging them.

What have I been treating as earned that was quietly given?

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

The Tao gives endlessly and claims nothing in return, feeding everything without keeping a ledger, which is why its supply never runs thin.

Judaism · Talmud

The sages taught that enjoying anything in the world without first blessing it is a kind of taking what was not yours, so gratitude is what makes a meal honest.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said we own nothing outright, only the use of things lent to us for a while, so the right posture toward what we have is thanks rather than grip.
