Genesis 1:5 · World English Bible

Genesis 1:5 Meaning God Called the Light “day

God called the light “day”, and the darkness he called “night”. There was evening and there was morning, the first day.

What does Genesis 1:5 mean?

The naming of light as Day and darkness as Night is the first act of consciousness dividing itself, spirit separating awareness from unawareness within the one field of being. Day is the lit state of the mind, the waking clarity in which a person sees; Night is the unlit ground, the deep unconscious out of which that clarity is drawn.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The naming of light as Day and darkness as Night is the first act of consciousness dividing itself, spirit separating awareness from unawareness within the one field of being. Day is the lit state of the mind, the waking clarity in which a person sees; Night is the unlit ground, the deep unconscious out of which that clarity is drawn. Evening and morning together make the first day, the full turn from dark to light that is one complete cycle of coming into awareness, the initial motion by which the inner world begins to know itself.

What is described is the opening step of creation inside a person, the moment consciousness first distinguishes its own light from its own darkness and calls each by name.

Light: the lit clarity of consciousness, the waking awareness by which the inner self sees Darkness: the unlit ground of the mind, the deep unconscious out of which awareness rises Day: the state of inner waking, the illumined portion of consciousness Night: the unawakened depth, the dark ground before the light is drawn from it

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

At first everything lies mixed in the dark, without edges or names. The mind's first work is to divide, drawing light from darkness and holding them apart. Naming a thing lifts it out of that blur so it can be known. Calling one side "day" and the other "night" is the moment awareness switches on.

But the darkness is not destroyed. Evening returns, and light and dark take turns. One full turn is the first day. The mind works the same way: awareness cannot erase the unknown. It can only take turns with it, as waking gives way to sleep and back again.

Live Genesis 1:5 today

  1. Tonight, give a plain name to one feeling you have been carrying around unnamed all day. Tired, jealous, relieved. Naming it turns fog into something you can see by.
  2. In a group chat or at dinner, say what is actually going on for you instead of the easier version. Light does not arrive in a room until somebody calls something by its name.
  3. When your mood turns hard in traffic or in a long line, label it quietly: this is impatience. You are not pushing the dark away, just telling day from night so you know where you are standing.

What in me am I refusing to name, and what does keeping it unnamed cost me?

Tao Te Ching 2

Light and dark define each other. Name one and you have made the other, so the pair is a single act of the mind, not two separate things out in the world.

Zen

The teaching warns against mistaking the finger for the moon. Naming light and dark is useful, but the field itself was whole before you drew the line.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that things do not disturb us, our judgments about them do. Calling a thing by its name is where your clarity or your confusion actually begins.
