PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Creation begins with a split. Before it there is only water, one endless undivided mass with no up and no down. The first act is to separate, to set a space between the waters above and the waters below, and from that first cut a world with order becomes possible.

The mind is made the same way. In the beginning everything inside is one dim flood with nothing told apart. Awareness starts the moment a person can divide that flood, this from that, inside from outside. Making the first distinction is what turns a formless depth into a world someone can actually live in and know.

Live Genesis 1:7 today

  1. Give one thing in your day a hard edge. Phone in a drawer for one hour, or work email closed after a set time, so the day stops being one long smear.
  2. With someone you love, separate their mood from your mood. Ask how they are without assuming their bad afternoon is about you.
  3. When everything at work feels equally on fire, draw a line between what is actually yours to carry and what belongs to someone else. Say the second part out loud to the right person.

Where is your life running together into one flood, and what single line would give it room?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 11

A wheel works because of the hole at its center, a room because of the space inside the walls. The gap you put between things is what makes them useful.

Buddhism

Attention trained carefully learns to tell the body from the feeling, the feeling from the thought. That spacing is what ends the sense of being swept along by one undivided flood.

Judaism · Talmud

Much of the law is the work of separating: this from that, holy time from ordinary time, one thing from its neighbor. The dividing is not fussiness, it is how a life becomes livable.
